Powerful Verbs 1

Jason’s teacher likes his writing but he wants him to make it more exciting by replacing the verb 'walked' with more descriptive verbs. The teacher has given Jason some new verbs but can you place them in the right order so the story makes sense? Check the meaning of each of these words below if you need a clue!

"Good work Jason! Now try and replace the BLUE words with one of the 5 descriptive verbs I have suggested."

After I had lunch I went out into the playground and walked slowly [, hobbled, approached, staggered, strolled, marched] out to the big tree with Richard. It was a hot day and we were going to relax in the shade. Just as we sat down we saw Tony as he walked quickly [, hobbled, approached, staggered, strolled, marched] up to Matthew and pushed him over on purpose! As Matthew fell it looked like he twisted his ankle badly but he managed to get up and he walked shakily [, hobbled, approached, staggered, strolled, marched] to Mr. Webb who was on duty. Mr. Webb lead Matthew inside, but he was only just able to make it to the door as he walked so unsteadily [, hobbled, approached, staggered, strolled, marched] all the way. Matthew and I walked up to [, hobbled, approached, staggered, strolled, marched] Mr. Webb and told him what we had seen happen.

 

The next time you do some writing try and use these new verbs in place of the verb walked!

approach - to come or go nearer to someone
hobble- to walk with difficulty; limp.
march – to proceed directly and purposefully
stagger – to move unsteadily as if about to fall over
stroll - to go for a relaxed, slow walk:
