Parachute Activities

North, South, East, West

The parachute is placed on the ground quite flat. Either use cards placed round the edge of the parachute, or make a compass face out of cardboard, which is about a metre across and place it at the centre of the parachute.

Cards round the edge have the letters N, S, E and W on them and are placed at the appropriate points to indicate North, South, East and West. The card in the centre has similar letters drawn on it.

The children sit round the edge of the parachute. The teacher gives commands like, “Roll to the East”, or “Hop to the North”.

The game can be developed by adding NE,SE, SW and NW.

It could go even further using the ones in between like North by North East.

Another way to play the game is for the teacher to use the game “Simon Says”.

If the teacher says “Simon Says Crawl to the South” the children do it. But if the teacher just says “Crawl to the South” no one should move. Anyone who does move is declared OUT.

Another possibility is to give orders like, “Take five steps to the South West”.
