Parachute Activities

Clock Face

If the parachute has more than 12 sections, the extra sections can be folded under. The parachute is then placed flat on the floor. The numbers are placed onto the parachute in sequence so that it can look like a clock.

Two bean bags of differing colours (perhaps red and blue) are needed. Two ribbons of differing colours, but the same as the bean bags, are needed (again red and blue) The red bag and ribbon represent the little hand of the clock, and the blue bag and ribbon are for the big hand.

One children stands in the middle of the parachute holding one end of each ribbon. The other ends are held by two children standing on the edge. The bean bags are held by two other children in the circle.

The teacher either blows a whistle or says “Throw” and the bean bags are thrown onto the parachute so that they land in different sections.

Those holding the ends of the ribbons pass their ribbon along the line from one to the next until the red ribbon is held above the red bag, and the blue ribbon is above the blue bag.

One child is then asked to say what the time is.

This could be played in teams, with one team setting up the time, and the other team working out what the time is.

The teacher or the other team could tell those holding the ribbons to move the clock forward quarter of an hour, or tell them to go back twenty minutes. The person holding the hour hand has to remember to make slight adjustments like the hour on a clock really would do.

Another way to play this game is for the teacher to call out a time and the children must move the ribbons round to the time called out.
