Parachute Activities

Flying

In order to do this exercise, it is very important that the players understand that it must be done in a safe and disciplined manner. It can be very dangerous if it is not led by a responsible person, helped by responsible players.

The parachute must be folded in a proper way to give it strength.

Fold the parachute in half so that there is now a double layer of fabric.

Then, roll in the edges tightly to form a rectangle.

Those people with the pointed ends will have to roll in more than the others.

Players need to be shoulder to shoulder, when they have finished rolling.

Always start with the lightest person.

If you go from heavy to light, you may throw dangerously high.

It is important that everyone knows their role in protecting the “flier”.

They must never let go of the parachute.

They must not bend forward.

They must not try to pull harder than anyone else.

To fly safely, the players need to hold the rectangle taut at waist height. Their feet need to be slightly apart, so that they can brace themselves for the landing.

The person to be flown lies on their back with their legs together and their arms crossed over their chest, or close to their sides.

They lie centrally on the parachute.

Most people think that to fly you need to bounce the parachute up and down. This is NOT the case and can make people go dangerously high.

All that is needed to make a person fly is for everyone to lean back on a count of THREE, locking their elbows.

This is enough to send someone one metre high.

It is possible that the flier might not go straight up in the air, so everyone must be ready to move in order to catch them centrally. The parachute must still be taut at waist height, braced ready to catch.

If the players lean forward, the flier will hit the ground, therefore the more people holding the parachute the better.

If gym mats are available, place them under the parachute, otherwise grass or sand are better than a hard surface.
