World War II

World War II began on 3rd September 1939, after Germany had invaded Poland.
The war was between the Allied powers and the Axis powers.
Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister for most of the war and Adolf Hitler was the leader of Germany.

The war on land and in the air was fought mainly in Europe, Asia and Africa.
The war at sea was fought mainly in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Germany finally surrendered on 7th May 1945.

The war did not end until 14th August 1945, when Japan surrendered, a week after two atomic bombs had been dropped on Japan.

Over 30 million people were killed in World War II.

The main Allied powers were:

Britain, France, Russia, USA, China, India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, The Caribbean.

The main Axis powers were:

Germany, Italy, Japan

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the leader of the USA.
The leader of Italy was Benito Mussolini. Stalin was the leader of Russia.
